The notebook is divided into components.

Not all components are need for every lesson, but each component has a template format/location to be used every time.

1. Unit title

When we end the third (last) lesson in any unit, we instruct the children to skip X pages. We then give the students an Avery label with the name of the next unit. The label goes on the top of the first page of the section dedicated to the next unit. In this format the first page will always be on the left; students will be able to have two pages open.

2. Unit vocabulary

This list is directly from out web based lesson plan. Students tape this into their notebook under the unit title.

The students have two weeks until our next visit. All vocabulary words are to be written out and defined on the following pages of the book. When the first lesson of the next unit starts, children will have the vocabulary portion complete. There will be two spaces between definitions. That way students can add their own words/definitions, in alphabetical order, as the unit progresses.

3. Lesson heading

Date, Title, Purpose. The purpose will always be posed as a question that can be answered by the end of the class.

4. Lesson notes

Pretty much copied off the board, although many students do customize.

5. Graph, table,

Usually filled in and taped into book.

6. Graphic organizer

Most of the time these are generated on board. Bulleted list, Venn diagram. Ideally, more sophisticated Scwartz graphic organizers will be distributed and completed in class, taped into notes.

7. Sketch/drawing

Student generated artwork depicting some key portion of the lesson.

8. Rough draft

Always on a left, odd numbered page. Double margined, double spaced. Next page will be used for an edit/final effort.
Students will need to flip back to look at notes, but rough/next draft will be on opposing pages.
